PACK SECRETS HAS DOUBLED IN SIZE
The best places to look through packs are usually major discount stores such as Target, Wal-Mart, Walgreens, etc. These stores will usually buy a lot of different products in large quantities. Also, they generally don't care what you do as long as you don't make a big mess or rip open the packs. Be neat and honest and you should have no problems. Pharmacies, toy stores, convenience stores and grocert stores can be great places to check out too.
It's best to start from freshly opened boxes. If a box in a store looks like it's been mixed-up already, then some of the pack secrets may not work. These are the kinds of secrets that give you the specific locations of packs. If in doubt, you can use your secrets and buy one pack. If you don't get what you're looking for in that pack, then move on - don't waste any more time or money on that box. One final word of caution - some dealers and card shop owners will try to discourage searching by purposely mixing up their boxes before they set them out for sale.
Several of the pack secrets will tell you to use the "slide method". This method does take some practice but once you get used to it you'll find that it's pretty simple. The sliding method is where you put your fingers at the ends of the pack so you can slide the cards up and down. While doing this, push on the middle front and back of the pack so you can slide the cards up and down. You will feel the cards slide easily into two separate stacks if there is an insert inside. Suggested tip is that you buy a pack and then put an insert in the pack and note any differences that you feel.
As a general rule, when looking for die-cut cards, try sliding your fingers from top to bottom on the pack. If you feel the cards sponge, then there's usually an insert inside. Also, feel the corners on packs to make sure they are all square, or the same shape. If one is a different shape than the rest, then you are onto something.
Depending on the issue, different rack packs, jumbo packs, any packs with clear wrappers, or even store specialty packs can be searched card by card. However, this will only work if you can see through the wrapping(ideally, you'll want to have a good look at the name on the front of the card or the card # on the back of the card.) It pays to examine some cards from the set that you are going to the store to look through if you know, because then you know where the names are printed, where the numbers are at, and if the rookies are foil stamped, etc. Since these tyes of packages usually have a little extra room inside the pack for the cards to move, you can use your fingernails to slide each card away from the others and see who it is. Be careful doing this you don't want to damage the cards. This process can be very time consuming, but if there's some big rookies or inserts in those packs it can be well worth the effort.

1996 SP:
Rookie base cards (cards 1-20): In a box, the rookies run in order. For instance, if the top right-hand pack has a rookie of #5 Eddie George, then the pack directly under it has a rookie card of #6 Terry Glenn, and the pack under that will have a rookie card of #7 Terrell Owens and so on. This only works for the red-foil rookies (cards 1-20). All-Pros: The tops and bottoms of these cards are die-cut and are on top of the pack. Feel for the arching die-cut on the top and bottom.
99-00 Encore Basketball
The rookie card ser. # to 1999 is always in the middle and usually in the bottom pack.
2007 Topps Baseball Rack packs or fat packs often have rookies right on the front, just look for the one you want.
